William Byrd: Vigilate (1589)

Vigilate, nescitis enim quando Dominus domus
veniat: sero, an media nocte, an gallicantu, an
mane. Vigilate ergo, ne cum venerit repente
inveniat vos dormientes. Quod autem dico
vobis omnibus dico: Vigilate.

Keep watch, for you know not when the Lord
of the house shall come: in the evening, or at
midnight, or at cock-crow, or in the morning.
Keep watch therefore, lest he come suddenly and
fi nd you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all:
Keep watch.
