William Byrd: Salve, Regina / Et Jesum (1591)

Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae: vita,
dulcedo et spes nostra, salve. Ad te clamamus,
exules fi lii Evae. Ad te suspiramus, gementes
et fl entes in hac lacrimarum valle. Eja ergo,
advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos
ad nos converte.

Hail, Queen, Mother of mercy: our life, our
sweetness and our hope, hail. To thee we cry, the
exiled sons of Eve. To thee we sigh, groaning and
weeping in this vale of tears. Come then, our
advocate, turn those thy pitying eyes towards us.

Et Jesum benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis
post hoc exilium ostende.
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis virgo Maria.

And show us, after this exile, Jesus, the blessed
fruit of thy womb.
O clement, O holy, O sweet virgin Mary.
